Subject: Update to JOWBRFrom: Joyce Field Date: Sat, 24 Nov 2007 13:43:47 -0500X-Message-Number: 3JewishGen is pleased to announce a recent update to JewishGen'sOnline Worldwide Burial Registry (JOWBR), bringing the total numberof burial records in this searchable database to over 980,000.Although we had hoped that this update of close to 186,000 recordswould bring us to over a million records, that milestone will haveto wait until the next update.JOWBR has added more than 148,000 Austrian records, over 4,400Canadian records (Beth Tzedec, Toronto), 1,328 records from India,4,830 records from Romania, and the first batch of records andphotographs--4,375-- from Chernivtsi (Czernowitz), Ukraine. TheAshkenazi Cemetery at Guanabacoa, Cuba has been updated andphotographs of more than one-third of all the tombstones have beenadded.JewishGen wishes to thank all the donors who have submitted data toJOWBR and to encourage individuals and organizations to "adopt" acemetery and submit the data and photographs of the tombstones toJOWBR. Hardly a day goes by that a researcher does not post amessage on a JewishGen digest asking for someone to take aphotograph at a cemetery or get information for them on a deceasedrelative from an inscription on a tombstone. Such requests couldsignificantly decrease if more cemeteries were indexed and the dataadded to JOWBR. Thus far there are 1,856 cemeteries andlandsmanschaft plots in JOWBR.
