Subject: Information from Vienna Jewish CommunityFrom: Celia Male Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2008 03:35:54 -0700 (PDT)X-Message-Number: 7I sent the contact address to Milton Koch *privately* and did thisfor a specific reason - the Vienna Jewish Community is small andcannot deal with thousands of requests which are often badly writtenand unclear ie who paid for great-aunt Fanny Schwarz's tombstone [with no further clues!].If you are really concerned about the cost of a tombstone, Henry Wellisch has provided clear links in a recent posting to the Austria-Czech SIG to the LDS catalogue which has all the relevantmicrofilms of data held at the IKG, Vienna. The films "Beerdigungsprotokolle" (burial protocols) and "Verzeichnisse derLeichenbegangnisse der IKG in Wien (Register of funerals of the Jewish community in Vienna) often show the cost of the funeral, the grave and the name and address of the person who paid for the costs. They can be found at www.familysearch.org, > go tolibrary catalog, >go to Place search, enter Wien, select Jewish records, select Matrikel 1826-1943.Anyone interested in Vienna should join the Austria-Czech SIG- where most questions can probably be answered fairly quickly by our knowledgeable group: http://www.jewishgen.org/austriaczech/ Tombstones were generally paid for by the deceased and his/herfamily. If someone was very poor, funds were provided by theIKG/Chevra kadisha. Please do not burden the IKG with queriesof this nature, until you have tried to solve them yourself.Celia Male - London, U.K.----------------------------------------------------------------------
