AGAD

Subject: Re: 100 Year old recordsFrom: "Mark Halpern" Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2006 21:05:51 -0400X-Message-Number: 2Dear Joseph:In each local community in Poland is a civil records office called UrzadStanu Cywilnego (or USC) in Polish. These offices are responsible forthe maintenance and protection of civil vital records 100 years old orless. Once the records in a vital record register book are all over 100years old or more, the book is to be transferred to the regional officeof the Polish State Archives (PSA). Once transferred to the PSA Branch, the records over 100 years old are available to the public. The AGAD Archive, a branch of PSA, is not a regional Archive, but housesthe vital records over 100 years old that are from territories formerlyin Poland, but currently in another country. The AGAD Archive maintainsthe vital record registers for about 85-90 towns formerly in Galicia, but now located in Ukraine. These Ukrainian Galician records that are100 years old or less are maintained at the Warsaw USC -- civil recordsoffice.Based on JRI-Poland's experience since 2000 in indexing Jewish recordsat AGAD, the Warsaw USC transfers vital record registers, where all therecords are over 100 years old, every two years. Registers weretransferred in 2006 and we expect that more registers will not betransferred again until 2008.The answer to your question as it pertains to AGAD and Warsaw USC isthat records 100 years old or less are maintained at the Warsaw USC andrecords over 100 years old are at the AGAD Archive. Some records over100 years old remain at the Warsaw USC as they are included in registerswhere records 100 years old or less still exist. The records at the Warsaw USC, whether they are over 100 years old orless than 100 years old, are protected from public use by regulationsthat govern the operation of USC offices. You cannot search the recordsat the Warsaw USC without special permission. Genealogists are notprovided with any special permissions.Having said all this about the AGAD Archive and the Warsaw USC, you mayfind that other Archives and USC offices in Poland are manageddifferently. The bottom line, however, is that vital records 100 yearsold or less are restricted from public use by regulation.Mark HalpernAGAD Archive Coordinator----- Original Message ----- I have read some contradictory information regarding records that are
